Our story

Sarah and Milly

I'm Sarah, and Milly is my best friend. She's a rescue dog who came to me carrying a lot of fear. This site grew out of what the two of us have learned about living with dog anxiety.

Milly, a Maltese Shih Tzu cross

Finding Milly

In my mid-20s I was living in the city and wanted the company of a small, loving dog. I chose to rescue a dog who’d been abandoned, instead of buying a puppy from a pet store or breeder.

One day, at a local rescue shelter, I saw her. Milly is a Maltese Shih Tzu cross with the most soulful eyes I’ve ever seen. It felt as if she understood me before we’d even met. There was an instant connection, and a silent promise that we’d be there for each other.

Living with anxiety

As we settled into life together, I found that Milly carried deep emotional scars. She struggled with separation anxiety and was afraid of loud noises, thunderstorms and fireworks.

It broke my heart to see her tremble and cower, and I was determined to give her the love and security she deserved.

What helped

Our journey has had setbacks and breakthroughs. I spent countless hours researching, asked for expert advice and tried different techniques to ease Milly’s anxiety. We worked on her triggers gradually and built her confidence with positive reinforcement. Patience became my greatest ally.

With time, Milly made remarkable progress. I celebrated every small win with her, from her first calm moment during a thunderstorm to the peace she found when left alone for short periods. Today she has a home where she feels safe and secure.

Why I share our story

Dog anxiety is complex, and it affects so many dogs. I share our story, along with what I’ve learned and the resources I’ve found, to help other owners who are on a similar journey.

Whether you’re a worried pet parent or you’re looking for information and guidance, you’re welcome here.

A note on advice
