Crates and safe spaces

A covered crate can become a quiet den for a dog who already likes it. For a dog who panics when shut in, it can make things worse, so start with how your dog feels about crates.

When a crate may help

For fireworks, the American Kennel Club suggests a den such as a basement, a closet or your dog’s crate if that’s where they feel safe. The RSPCA advises settling your dog in the den each evening before the fireworks begin and keeping it open to them at all times.

A cover makes a wire crate darker and more enclosed, which suits dogs who look for somewhere small and tucked away when they’re frightened.

When to skip the crate

Some anxious dogs panic when they’re confined. The ASPCA lists trying to escape from a room or crate as a sign of separation anxiety, and advises watching for distress and using a single room with a baby gate instead if you see it. See your vet if your dog damages a crate trying to get out.

That’s why we haven’t included heavy-duty crates sold as escape-proof. A dog breaking out of a crate needs help with the fear, not a stronger crate.

Setting up a den

  • Choose a quiet spot away from windows and foot traffic.
  • Add your dog’s bed, a favorite toy and a few treats.
  • Leave the door open so the crate stays a place your dog chooses.
  • Make it your dog’s own. Nobody disturbs them there, children included.

Choosing a cover

  • Match the cover to your crate’s length, width and height.
  • Look for mesh panels or breathable fabric for airflow, especially in warm rooms.
  • A washable cover is easier to keep fresh.
