A bed or blanket won't treat anxiety on its own. What it can give your dog is a soft, familiar place to retreat to, and that's something vets and animal welfare groups recommend for frightened dogs.

Many frightened dogs look for somewhere small, enclosed and quiet. For storms, Dr Jenni Green, a veterinarian at the University of Sydney, suggests a spot such as a bathroom, a closet or a space under furniture, set up with a comfortable bed. For fireworks, the American Kennel Club suggests a quiet den with your dog’s bed, favorite toys and a few treats, and the RSPCA advises keeping it open to your dog at all times.
So-called calming beds are usually round, with a raised rim your dog can lean against and a deep, soft fill to curl into. The design is about comfort and security, not treatment. A blanket does a similar job in a crate, on the sofa or in the car, and it carries the smell of home with it.
Put the bed where your dog already likes to rest. Let your dog choose the spot, and add it to the den you set up for storms or fireworks.
