Anxiety wraps

Anxiety wraps, often called thunder shirts, fit snugly around your dog's chest and body. They may help some dogs feel more settled during storms, fireworks and other stressful moments.

How a wrap may help

A wrap applies gentle, constant pressure. Dr Jenni Green at the University of Sydney compares it to swaddling a baby. The American Kennel Club lists anxiety vests among the options to talk through with your vet, alongside training and a safe space.

A wrap doesn’t change how your dog feels about the noise or the event itself. Use it as one part of a plan that includes a safe place, background sound and step-by-step training between events.

Which dogs they may suit

  • Dogs who seem calmer when they lean against you or are held
  • Dogs who struggle with storms, fireworks, car rides or vet visits
  • Dogs who are already happy wearing a harness or a coat

How to introduce a wrap

  • Put it on for the first time on a calm day, so the wrap isn’t one more strange thing in the middle of a storm. That’s the advice in our thunderstorm guide.
  • Keep the first sessions short and pair them with treats or a meal.
  • Check the fit against the maker’s size chart. It should be snug, not tight.
  • Take it off if your dog freezes, scratches at it or seems more worried.
  • Follow the maker’s guidance on how long to leave it on.

Ear wraps for noise

A soft band over the ears muffles sound. Some owners use one for grooming and drying as well as for noisy nights. Introduce it the same way as a vest, in short, rewarded sessions on quiet days.
