Pet cameras

A camera won't calm your dog. What it can do is show you how your dog copes when you're out, which is the first step in helping with separation anxiety.

Why watching helps

The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that the signs of separation anxiety are often most severe in the first 15 to 30 minutes of being alone. Some dogs struggle quietly, too. The RSPCA says half of the dogs who find it hard to cope alone show no obvious signs. Quieter signs include trembling, panting, heavy drooling and refusing food until you’re home.

Filming your dog for the first half hour after you leave is the quickest way to tell distress from boredom, and the video is useful if you see a vet or behaviorist.

Using a camera in training

The ASPCA describes a gradual program built on absences short enough for your dog to stay calm. A live view shows you when your dog starts to worry, so you can come back before they do and keep the next absence shorter.

What to look for

  • A wide view or pan and tilt, so you can follow your dog around the room.
  • A phone app with live view and recording.
  • Night vision, if your dog is home after dark.
  • Subscription costs. Some cameras need a paid plan to work, and the cards below say so.
  • Treat tossing, if you’d like to reward calm behavior from afar. Only some cameras do this.
